When Sela Block wants to release stress, she cranks up the music and dances around her house. She may not realize that science supports her methods. “For me, listening to music and moving around are great relaxation techniques for anxiety and stress,” she said.

A study in the journal PLOS One shows music can reduce anxiety and stress. The research found both soothing and dance music can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety as well as reduce stress.

The difference between anxiety and stress

Anxiety and stress are different. Anxiety is a type of stress that continues after the cause of your stress is gone. Stress occurs from a factor that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. The following relaxation techniques for anxiety and stress reduction are easy to do.

Get moving

Dancing, walking, running, and exercising are ideal relaxation techniques for stress reduction. According to the American Psychological Association, all forms of exercise can reduce anxiety and stress.

Meditate

Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly with your eyes closed and meditate. Meditation is a great relaxation technique for stress reduction. You can also practice mindfulness mediation.
