What causes a cold?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colds are caused by a variety of viruses; the rhinovirus is the most common. The rhinovirus can also cause asthma attacks and sinus and ear infections.

How are colds spread?

If someone you know has a cold, don’t hug or shake his hand. Colds are spread by:

  • Handshakes and hugs
  • Touching someone who is infected with a cold
  • Sharing saliva (that means kissing or sharing a drink from the same glass)
  • Touching a shared surface with a person who has a cold
  • Airborne cold or cough droplets from an infected person
