What causes a cold?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colds are caused by a variety of viruses; the rhinovirus is the most common. The rhinovirus can also cause asthma attacks and sinus and ear infections.
How are colds spread?
If someone you know has a cold, don’t hug or shake his hand. Colds are spread by:
- Handshakes and hugs
- Touching someone who is infected with a cold
- Sharing saliva (that means kissing or sharing a drink from the same glass)
- Touching a shared surface with a person who has a cold
- Airborne cold or cough droplets from an infected person
