What Research Is Being Done on ALS?

Personalized medicine for ALS

Precision medicine moves away from the old one-size-fits-all model of treatment into a more customized approach that tailors therapy to an individual’s genes, lifestyle, and environment.

Developing a custom-fit treatment requires an understanding of how genes contribute to the development of ALS. With support from the ALS Association, Columbia University Medical Center and the biotech company Biogen launched the Genomic Translation for ALS Clinical Care project.

The international study is examining the causes and patterns of progression of ALS.  Researchers are sequencing genes from 1,500 people with ALS, using what they learn to develop more targeted treatments.
