Kids Need Limits in Their Lives

  • Sleep. Your child needs rest. Bedtime should be set after considering both the child's needs and the family routine.

  • Food. Children will resist trying new food. Parents should accept this and focus less on the quantity of food consumed and more on the nutritional quality. Parents need to teach children that health comes from eating a variety of items.

  • Aggression. Children need to learn non-violent ways to handle frustration. Anything that hurts another person is worth doing something about. It's also effective -- and important -- to "catch" your child behaving well, experts say.
