Stomach Cancer: Statistics

What are statistics?

Some people use statistics to try to figure out their chances of getting cancer. People may also use them to try to figure out their chance of being cured of cancer. It is important to keep in mind, however, that statistics show what happens with large groups of people. They do not take into account a person's own risk factors, such as family history, behaviors, or cancer screenings. Because no 2 people are alike, you can't use statistics to know or predict what will happen to you. If you have questions, talk with your healthcare provider.

What are the statistics for stomach cancer?

Here are the 2018 statistics about stomach cancer in the United States:

  • About 26,240 people will be told they have this cancer in a year.

  • Men get stomach cancer more often than women do. About 16,520 men will be told they have it. About 9,720 women will be told they have it.

  • About 10,800 people will die of this cancer in 2018. Of those, 6,510 will be men and 4,290 will be women.
