What is this medicine?

TAVABOROLE (ta va BO role) is an antifungal medicine. It is used to treat certain kinds of fungal infections of the toenail.

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is for external use only. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the label. Wash hands before and after use. Apply this medicine as directed to cover the entire toenail. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your doctor or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on the advice of your doctor or health care professional.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • ingrown toenail

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • redness or irritation at application site

  • mild skin irritation

What may interact with this medicine?

Interactions have not been studied. Do not use any other nail products (i.e., nail polish, pedicures) during treatment with this medicine.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep this medicine in the original container. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date, or within 3 month after insertion of the dropper.

This medicine is flammable. Avoid exposure to heat, fire, flame, and smoking.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to tavaborole, other medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Do not get this medicine in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.

Tell your doctor or healthcare professional if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.

After bathing make sure that your feet are very dry. Fungal infections like moist conditions. Do not walk around barefoot. To help prevent reinfection, wear freshly washed cotton, not synthetic, clothing. Tell your doctor or health care professional if you develop sores or blisters that do not heal properly. If your nail infection returns after you stop using this medicine, contact your doctor or health care professional.
