Sulfacetamide skin foam

What is this medicine?

SULFACETAMIDE (sul fa SEE ta mide) is a sulfonamide antibiotic. It is used to treat minor skin infections of the scalp. It also helps certain scalp conditions like seborrhea.

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is for external use only. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use. Shake the can well before use. Turn the can upside down and dispense a small amount of foam into hand. The hair should be towel-dried or dry before application to the scalp. With fingers, gently massage foam into affected areas of the scalp until the foam disappears. Allow treated area to air-dry. Do not wash the treated area immediately after application of the foam. The hair should be washed with shampoo at least once a week. Hair styling products can be applied as usual after the foam has been applied. Do not get this medicine in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water. Use your doses at regular intervals. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your doctor or health care professional even if you think your condition is better.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • fever

  • joint pains

  • skin rash, redness, blistering, peeling of skin or mouth or other areas

  • sore mouth or mouth ulcers

  • unusually weak or tired

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • mild skin irritation or dryness

What may interact with this medicine?

  • silver-containing skin products

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature below 40 degrees C (104 degrees F). Do not freeze. Keep away from heat, smoking and flame. This product is flammable. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • large areas of burned or damaged skin

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to sulfacetamide, sulfa drugs, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Tell your doctor or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days.

If you get any sign of an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and call your doctor or health care professional.

Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or sun tanning beds or booths.
