What is this medicine?

SORBITOL is a laxative. This medicine is used to relieve constipation.

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure each dose. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. Household spoons are not accurate. You can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food.

This medicine may also be used rectally with an enema. Follow the directions on the label. Wash your hands before and after use. Remove tip from enema. Gently insert enema tip into the rectum. Squeeze until all of the medicine is inside the rectum. Remove enema tip from the rectum. Do not use more often than directed.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• diarrhea

• nausea, vomiting

• stomach pain

Interactions are not expected.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply. This medicine is not for regular use, and should only be used as needed.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• stomach or intestine problems

• an unusual or allergic reaction to sorbitol, fructose, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Tell your doctor or healthcare professional if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse. Do not use this medicine for longer than directed by your doctor or health care professional. This medicine can be habit-forming. Long-term use can make your body depend on the laxative for regular bowel movements, damage the bowel, cause malnutrition, and problems with the amounts of water and salts in your body. If your constipation keeps returning, check with your doctor or health care professional.

Do not use with any other laxatives. Drink fluids as directed to prevent dehydration. See your doctor right away if you do not have a bowel movement after using this medicine.
