What are pleconaril capsules?
PLECONARIL (Picovir®) is a drug which has been used to treat certain infections caused by viruses. Pleconaril may also be used to treat other infections as determined by your doctor. NOTE: This drug is not yet available in the US.
What should my health care professional know before I use pleconaril?
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:
dehydrated or a history of dehydration (lack of adequate fluids in your body)
difficulty with urination
hepatitis
kidney disease
kidney stones or crystals
liver disease
an unusual or allergic reaction to pleconaril, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
Pleconaril is taken by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. You should take pleconaril with a meal that contains some food high in fat content (such as whole milk, butter, cheese, bacon or peanut butter). Talk to your doctor for advice if you are on fat-restricted diet. Follow the instructions given to you by your prescriber or health care professional.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with pleconaril?
There are no known drug interactions with pleconaril.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before starting or stopping any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking pleconaril?
Finish the whole course of treatment even if you start to feel better sooner. The entire treatment is needed to make sure the infection is totally treated. Do not share pleconaril with anyone, even if they have the same symptoms.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve within a few days.
You may get dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how pleconaril affects you.
What side effects may I notice from using pleconaril?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
continued or severe diarrhea
fainting
severe abdominal pain or pain in the lower back
pain while urinating
vomiting
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
appetite loss
dizziness
headache
heartburn
nausea
weakness or drowsiness
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15 degrees and 30 degrees C (59 degrees and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

Follow the directions on the prescription label. You may need to take pleconaril with a meal that contains some food high in fat content (such as whole milk, butter, cheese, bacon or peanut butter), but if you are using the suspension you may not need to eat a fatty meal with pleconaril. Ask your health care professional if you should take the pleconaril suspension with a fatty meal. Talk to your doctor for advice if you are on fat-restricted diet. Follow the instructions given to you by your prescriber or health care professional.
