Miconazole buccal tablet

What is this medicine?

MICONAZOLE (mi KON a zole) is an antifungal medicine. It is used to treat certain kinds of fungal or yeast infections of the mouth.

How should I use this medicine?

With dry hands, apply this medicine to your upper gum, to the right or left of your two front teeth. Hold the tablet in place using slight pressure to the outer lip for 30 seconds to help the tablet stick to the gum. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not cut, crush, or chew this medication. You may eat and drink while using this medication, but do not chew gum. Change where you place this medicine between the right and left side of your upper gum with each use. If this medicine does not stick or falls off within the first 6 hours, reapply it. If it still does not stick, replace it with a new tablet. If you swallow the tablet within the first 6 hours, drink a glass of water and apply a new tablet only once. If this medicine falls off or is swallowed after it was in place for 6 hours, do not apply a new tablet. Place your next dose at the regular time. Upper dentures may interfere with the placement of this medicine. Finish the full course prescribed by your doctor or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on the advice of your doctor or health care professional.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

• pain or swelling at the application site

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• changes in taste

• cough

• diarrhea

• dry mouth

• headache

• nausea, vomiting

• stomach upset

• upper stomach pain

• weak or tired

What may interact with this medicine?

• certain medicines for diabetes

• certain medicines that treat or prevent blood clots like warfarin

• ergot alkaloids like dihydroergotamine, ergonovine, ergotamine, methylergonovine

• phenytoin

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F). Protect from moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• liver disease

• an unusual or allergic reaction to miconazole, other medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Tell your doctor or healthcare professional if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.
