What is this medicine?

NEOMYCIN; POLYMYXIN B (nee oh MYE sin; pol i MIX in B) is a combination of an aminoglycoside antibiotic and a polymyxin antibiotic. It is used to help prevent urinary tract infections in the bladder.

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is for continuous irrigation of your bladder. It is usually given in a hospital by a health care professional.

If you are to receive this medicine at home, your doctor or health care professional will give you additional instructions.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • bladder, urinary tract burning, stinging

  • change in amount or color of urine

  • genital, urinary tract itching

  • hearing loss

  • muscle weakness

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

You will be instructed on how to store this medicine, if needed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date on the label.

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • bladder problems

  • kidney disease

  • other chronic illness

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to neomycin, polymyxin, other antibiotics or medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Your doctor or health care professional will monitor your condition.
