What is brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin caplets?
BROMPHENIRAMINE, DEXTROMETHORPHAN, AND GUAIFENESIN (Tusnel®) are used together to decrease symptoms caused by colds or allergies. Brompheniramine is an antihistamine that relieves runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes. Dextromethorphan helps to stop cough. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps loosen phlegm or mucus in the lungs. This product is not intended to treat chronic cough caused by smoking, asthma, emphysema, heart failure, or problems in which there is a large amount of phlegm. Generic brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin products are not available.
What should my health care professional know before I take brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
asthma or other lung disease
chronic bronchitis
emphysema
glaucoma or other eye disease
heart disease
high or low blood pressure
liver disease
pain or difficulty passing urine
prostate trouble
seizures
stomach or intestinal problems
thyroid disease
wear contact lenses
an unusual or allergic reaction to brompheniramine, dextromethorphan, guaifenesin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives (some combination products contain bromides)
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
breast-feeding
How should I take this medicine?
Take caplets by mouth. Follow the directions on the label. Swallow the caplets whole with a glass of water; do not chew. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin?
alcohol
amiodarone
barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
furazolidone
linezolid
medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as diazepam or temazepam
medicines for hay fever and other allergies
medicines for mental depression or other mental disturbances
medicines for pain such as codeine, hydrocodone, meperidine, methadone, morphine, oxycodone, propoxyphene, and tramadol
medicines known as MAO inhibitors, such as phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), and selegiline (Carbex®, Eldepryl®)
quinidine
some medicines for gastrointestinal problems (such as atropine, dicyclomine, glycopyrrolate, hyoscyamine, or propantheline)
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 1 or 2 days.
You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin affects you. Alcohol can increase the risk of getting drowsy, dizzy or confused. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
Drink plenty of water while taking brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin products. This will help loosen mucus and relieve dry mouth. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking hard candy will also help dry mouth.
This product may cause dry eyes and blurred vision. If you wear contact lenses you may feel some discomfort. Lubricating drops may help. See your ophthalmologist if the problem does not go away or is severe.
If you are receiving skin tests for allergies, tell your physician you are using this product.
What side effects may I notice from taking brompheniramine; dextromethorphan; guaifenesin?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
blurred vision
confusion
fainting spells
insomnia
irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or chest pain
irritability, nervousness, excitability
muscle or facial twitches
pain or difficulty passing urine
seizures (convulsions)
severe nausea, vomiting
slurred speech
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
diarrhea or constipation
dizziness, drowsiness
hives
nausea, vomiting
rash
stomach ache
dry mouth
headache
loss of appetite
stomach upset
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) unless otherwise directed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
