Other ways to build strong bones

Too much weight puts pressure on your bones, joints, and muscles. A study published in the journal Radiology found that people who are overweight have hidden fat inside their bones that could make them weak and prone to fractures.

In addition to eating wisely and exercising, don’t smoke. Smoking is a bad habit that can decrease bone mass. Studies have shown that smoking prevents your body from effectively absorbing calcium, which leads to bone loss.

If your doctor diagnoses you with osteoporosis or osteopenia, ask about other ways you can build strong bones.
