How Safe Is Your Child?

More parents think their children are following safety rules when riding bicycles than the kids really are, researchers say. Writing in the May 2004 issue of the journal Injury Control and Safety Promotion, researchers found that although 70 percent of parents surveyed said their child always wore a helmet while riding a bike, only 51 percent of the children said they did. The gap was even wider for car passenger safety. Ninety-two percent of parents said their child always wore a seat belt in a car, but only 70 percent of their children agreed with that.
