What is this medicine?

PATIROMER (pa TIR oh mer) takes potassium out of the body by binding to it in the intestines. It is used to treat high levels of potassium in your blood.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• blockage in your bowel

• dry, hard stool that will not pass out of your rectum

• history of low levels of magnesium in the blood

• problems with your bowels after surgery

• severe constipation

• an unusual or allergic reaction to patiromer, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth. Measure 1/3 cup of water. Pour half of the water into a glass. Pour all of your packet contents into the glass. You may need more than 1 packet for your dose. Stir the mixture. Pour the remaining water into the cup containing the mixture. Stir well. The powder will not completely dissolve and will look cloudy. If the mixture is too thick, you can add more water. Drink the mixture right away. If any powder is left, add more water, stir and drink the mixture. Repeat as needed to make sure you take your entire dose. Take with food. Do not heat this medicine or add to heated foods or liquids. Do not take this medicine in its dry form. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed. Do not stop taking it except by your doctor's advice.

A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What may interact with this medicine?

Take other oral medicines 6 hours before or 6 hours after this medicine, to avoid decreasing their absorption.

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Tell your doctor or healthcare professional if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.

This medicine may cause constipation. Try to have a bowel movement at least every 2 to 3 days. If you do not have a bowel movement for 3 days, call your doctor or health care professional.

You may need blood work done while you are taking this medicine.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

• signs and symptoms of low magnesium like muscle cramps, pain, or weakness; tremors; seizures; or fast, irregular heartbeat

• signs and symptoms of low potassium like muscle cramps or muscle pain; chest pain; dizziness; feeling faint or lightheaded, falls; palpitations; breathing problems; or fast, irregular heartbeat

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• constipation

• diarrhea

• gas

• stomach pain

• upset stomach

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store in the refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees C (36 to 46 degrees F). If stored at room temperature, use within 3 months of being taken out of the refrigerator. Avoid exposure to heat above 40 degrees C (104 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
