Hexachlorophene skin cleanser

What is this medicine?

HEXACHLOROPHENE (hex a KLOR oh feen) is used as a skin cleanser. This medicine is also used as a surgical hand scrub and to cleanse the skin before surgery.

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is for external use only. Do not take by mouth. Keep out of eyes, ears and mouth. Follow the directions on the label or those given to you by your doctor or health care professional. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. While this medicine may be used for children for selected conditions, precautions do apply. This medicine is not for regular use on infants.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

• allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• skin irritation like redness, itching, or stinging

What may interact with this medicine?

Do not use any other skin products on the same area of skin without asking your doctor or health care professional.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply; this medicine is not for regular use. Do not use double or extra doses.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature up to 25 degrees C (77 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• large areas of burned or damaged skin

• skin conditions or sensitivity

• an unusual or allergic reaction to hexachlorophene, halogenated phenol derivatives, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

This medicine can make you more sensitive to the sun. Keep out of the sun. If you cannot avoid being in the sun, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen. Do not use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths.

Do not get this medicine in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.

This medicine can make certain skin conditions worse. Only use it for conditions for which your doctor or health care professional has prescribed.
