Dofetilide capsules

What is this medicine?

DOFETILIDE (doe FET il ide) is an antiarrhythmic drug. It helps make your heart beat regularly. This medicine also helps to slow rapid heartbeats.

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not take with grapefruit juice. You can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your doctor's advice.

A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medicine?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

  • breathing problems

  • chest pain or chest tightness

  • dizziness

  • signs and symptoms of a dangerous change in heartbeat or heart rhythm like chest pain; dizziness; fast or irregular heartbeat; palpitations; feeling faint or lightheaded, falls; breathing problems

  • signs and symptoms of electrolyte imbalance like severe diarrhea, unusual sweating, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst

  • swelling of the ankles, legs, or feet

  • tingling, numbness in the hands or feet

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • diarrhea

  • general ill feeling or flu-like symptoms

  • headache

  • nausea

  • trouble sleeping

  • stomach pain

What may interact with this medicine?

Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:

  • cimetidine

  • cisapride

  • dolutegravir

  • dronedarone

  • erdafitinib

  • hydrochlorothiazide

  • ketoconazole

  • megestrol

  • pimozide

  • prochlorperazine

  • thioridazine

  • trimethoprim

  • verapamil

This medicine may also interact with the following medications:

  • amiloride

  • cannabinoids

  • certain antibiotics like erythromycin or clarithromycin

  • certain antiviral medicines for HIV or hepatitis

  • certain medicines for depression, anxiety, or psychotic disorders

  • digoxin

  • diltiazem

  • grapefruit juice

  • metformin

  • nefazodone

  • other medicines that prolong the QT interval (an abnormal heart rhythm)

  • quinine

  • triamterene

  • zafirlukast

  • ziprasidone

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, skip it. Take your next dose at the normal time. Do not take extra or 2 doses at the same time to make up for the missed dose.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • heart disease

  • history of irregular heartbeat

  • history of low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood

  • kidney disease

  • liver disease

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to dofetilide, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

What should I watch for while using this medicine?

Your condition will be monitored carefully while you are receiving this medicine.
